Bands urge friends and family to “Pray for Emily”

On the rural roads of Morgantown and nearby towns you’ll find them near farms, on homes and on church billboards, signs that ask you to “Pray for Emily.”
From Emily’s hometown of Morgantown, to towns miles away, more than 700 signs have been placed. At her high school, friends are wearing T-shirts, arm bands and rubber bracelets in support of Emily. On the Internet, thousands of visitors to an online journal, have sent well wishes from as far away as Florida and Arizona.


Coach gives three senior basketball players bands…

Liz Bartle and the Brown City girls basketball team are looking for respect this season.

Her coach, Cindy Burton, even had silicone bracelets made up for Bartle and the team’s other seniors -Kayla Green and Jessica Miller - with the word emblazoned on them to remind them.


Students sell bands to create a memorial scholarship

After one of their top students, Jason Ammon Honey, 16, of Kunkletown, was killed in a car wreck in January, the staff and kids quickly created a scholarship in his name. Acting on an idea by Greg Smith, their welding teacher, three of Jason’s fellow students had the new scholarship formed less than a month after his funeral.

Wednesday night, eight bands made up of BHS students performed in a variety of musical styles to raise money to benefit both the BHS music program and Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, a conservation organization established by Irwin in 2002.

Monument paid for in part by sale of bands

Julie Schuler of the Adopt-A-Troop Committee said that the donation money came from the sale of yellow ribbons and rubber bracelets adorned with the words 1/320 Field Artillery Regiment, as well as personal donations from residents. She also said each of the cities will continue to hold fundraisers throughout the year to show support for the soldiers, including upcoming Halloween events in Villa Hills and Taylor Mill.


College students sell bands to support Red Sox pitcher

Four college students from the Boston area have launched a worthy project in support of Jon Lester, the Tacoma-bred pitcher with the Red Sox who is battling lymphoma.

The four women, who attend Northeastern University, Fisher College and Emmanuel College, are selling silicone bracelets and donating all proceeds to the Jimmy Fund in Lester’s name.

“It helps a lot of kids. It’s just a good charity,” said Michael Grouse. He and David Kinnard are partners in two participating Fantastic Sams in Pinellas Park and Largo.


Police use wristbands to generate support

The Middletown Police Department is hoping some blue wristbands - the brainchild of Lt. Robert Nutt - spread support for the proposed $8 million police station on Valley Road.

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 21 donated money recently to buy more than 1,000 of the silicone bracelets.
