Students sell bands in teacher’s memory
Karla Kunzman loved the zoo. She and her husband frequently had family outings there. When she could incorporate it into science lessons, the first-grade teacher at Grant Wood took her students to learn about animals.
Kunzman, 29, died unexpectedly last summer from what doctors believe was a heart problem. Behind her, she left a baby girl who was born with two chambers in her heart instead of four, a 6-year-old daughter and a husband she married less than two years ago.
In her memory, teachers, students and staff from the school are planning a fundraiser that will be held Friday night at the Niabi Zoo to benefit her daughters. They spent the last almost three months planning the event, which will cost $5 per person and feature carousel and train rides, food and a rare nighttime view of the animals. Also, students will sell yellow tulips, which were Kunzman’s favorite flower, and yellow rubber bracelets that say “Karla’s Kids” for $2.
