Team members wear bands to show support
The superintendent of Arcohe Elementary always picks her to welcome visiting dignitaries. Her soccer coach counts on her to make sure other kids on the team feel included.
Four months ago, Taylor was diagnosed as one of the youngest ovarian cancer patients on record, yet her sunny attitude has hardly wavered.
“I’m kind of like, there’s nothing I can do to stop it so I’ve got to go with the positives,” she said last week. “It doesn’t make me mad. It kind of makes me feel unique and special.”
After she started losing her hair, four classmates offered to shave their heads in solidarity. They’ve brought balloons and teddy bears and books and notes that say “you’re in my prayers.” The ladies at the Herald firehouse made her a quilt with some of her favorite animals on one side — sheep, horses, dogs, bunnies — and a soccer ball pattern on the other. Her soccer coach gave out 2,000 rubber bracelets with the team colors and the words “Strong as Steele.” Her teammates slip them around their ankles during games. When she goes to the grocery store, Taylor sees people she doesn’t even know wearing them.
