Students use bands to remember Irwin and raise money
Wednesday night, eight bands made up of BHS students performed in a variety of musical styles to raise money to benefit both the BHS music program and Wildlife Warriors Worldwide, a conservation organization established by Irwin in 2002.
BHS students Catherine McDonough and Matt Day conceived the idea. McDonough, producing the show under the tutelage of chorus director Sean Landers, said, “Financially the department is in debt because we have to pay for our own buses and trips.”
With last year’s School’s Out concert fundraiser in mind, McDonough and Day were attempting to put together a similar event when Irwin’s death hit the newsstands. “Because the Croc Hunter was on everybody’s minds, I thought, why not make it have a purpose?’” she said.
To add to the experience, McDonough decided to include sales of hip rubber wristbands bearing Irwin’s famous exclamation, “Crikey!” on one side and “The Crocodile Hunter” on the other. “We needed something else,” said McDonough. “Something extra.”
