Students use bands as fundraiser for museum
After corresponding with museum officials at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, a $25,000 donation was made to sponsor a pre-school reading nook.
“This may be the most touching, incredible donation we received,” said Betsy Grant, museum director. “We are just one block from the Mississippi Gulf and are in an old school building, all brick. The debris from all around came through the windows and destroyed what we had.”
Students, faculty and staff raised money throughout the year and saved it to make one big contribution instead of many small ones.
“There were all sorts of activities to raise money,” said Friedman. “Students did everything from having lemonade stands to collecting money in jars.”
Administration, teachers and staff took to Libertyville’s streets to “can” for money. Highland Middle School held its first teacher-sponsored talent show, and money from ticket sales was donated to the district’s “Coins for Katrina” drive.
Car washes and sales of rubber band bracelets and hand decorated flip-flops rounded out the efforts.
