4th Grader Markets Wristbands

From School sales a boost for books

By Julie Rooney/Enterprise staff writer
The North Davis Elementary School store is open for business, thanks to fourth-grader Malerie Beck.

The young entrepreneur recently approached Principal Judy Davis and asked if she could raise money for the school by opening a store. Davis said “yes,” and a few weeks later Malerie was in business.

The store sells stickers, notepads, pencils, glue sticks, play money, jump ropes and an assortment of other small items. Prices range from 5 cents to $2.

“Jump ropes are our best seller,” Malerie said.

The 9-year-old is no stranger to the world of retail. Last summer she ran her own business in front of her North Davis home. Called “Malerie’s Rubber Bracelet Business,” the little stand was filled with rubber wristbands, rubber rings and rubber duckies. Neighbor kids frequented her shop, with many kids returning regularly for yet another wristband to add to their collections.
